Youth Training

Testimony from Melanie Golding, mother of three female student
Written on July 29, 2008

"The art of Aikido has taught my 3 children that no matter how small or large you are, there are ways even a child can defend themselves against an attacker. It helps that they grew up watching their dad train in the art for over 14 years with Mr. Beckham, but the decision to join ultimately was their own. They joined not to win a trophy or a competition or even to gain a black belt before they were 20. They joined so that they could gain the confidence they needed in the event that they were seriously attacked. The school is big on respect for others which was Important in my children's lives. Although I feel they already are very respectful it was important for them to realize that this martial art is deadly and you can seriously hurt or kill another human being. So, it is important to respect the art in which you are training.

It's also important to know that learning this art has it's fun moments along with the serious moments. Some classes are spent sliding along the floor, jumping over the kicking pads and of course everyone ganging up on the Sensei all at once is always a highlight. I hope that no matter how long my children decide to stay with the art that they come away knowing they have the ability to defend themselves and help others if needed."
